JavsScript first impressions

So what are my first impressions of Javascript? Well, to answer that question I would like to talk about my experience with Java and C first and how this experience compares to how I felt about them.

First and foremost Java, obviously with this being the first coding language that I was taught through school, I had a lot of trouble getting the hang of it at first. You know, being a complete newbie to coding, having never done this sort of thing before of course I was going to have trouble with it at first. But, eventually I started to get the hang of it, and started to really enjoy coding. Although I had spent many nights awake frustrated that my programs didn’t work, I still very much enjoyed doing it, and learning all I could about it, and honestly I had a lot of fun with it. And by the end of the semester I felt really accomplished with myself that I was able to learn the basics of this language, and was able to find something that I really enjoyed doing.

Now with C/C++, that is a different story. After a rather successful semester learning Java, I felt pretty confident and really excited going into the next semester to learn even more about Java. Then come to find out that I would not be learning more about Java, but an entirely new language. Now at first, this didn’t upset me, I thought, “OK, maybe this will be similar to what I’ve learned before and I can do similar things.” I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I was learning C/C++, I was not having a good time. Mainly because I thought many of the things I learned in the previous semester didn’t really apply here. So as I was writing my programs, I kept going back to what I was comfortable with, and that ended up making this a lot more difficult for me. Long story short, I honestly didn’t have a good time learning C/C++, not just because it was different from what I had learned in the previous semester, but also because I just couldn’t get the hang of it. While doing my assignments I was looking things up all the time. Which led to things being confusing, and me being frustrated, but his time in a bad way.

Now we come to Javascript. Although I have only had a couple weeks now to get used to this language, I can honestly say that I have been enjoying it so far. Learning this language to me, just feels like a breath of fresh air. After my somewhat bad experience learning C, and quite frankly a very long time without coding (at least half a year), learning Javascript just feels good. I don’t know what it is about this language, but learning Javascript so far makes me think back, and honestly gives me the same feeling I had in my first semester of college. That feeling that I am going to enjoy learning this language, and excited to learn all I can about it. Now my first impressions about the language is that it is somewhat similar to Java, like the syntax of some things, I find are pretty similar, if not pretty much the same to the syntax in Java, and I find myself just going back to that when I am coding this language. Now I know that that is a bad habit, and I really shouldn’t be doing that, but I am slowly but surely moving away from thinking that this is just Java, but more convenient. Overall, I can say that I am really enjoying learning this language, and can’t wait to learn more about it.
